How to Make Silicone Mold?

1. Stir the silicone and curing agent. Mold silicone appearance is flow liquid, component A is silicone, component B is curing agent. 2. Vacuum exhaust bubble treatment: After evenly stir the silicone and curing agent, it will come to the vacuum exhaust bubble step. Vacuuming time should not be too long, under normal circumstances, not more than ten minutes. If the vacuuming time is too long, the silicone will immediately cured, resulting in cross-linking reaction and become pieces, which can’t be painted or perfusion.

3. Brushing or pouring process: Pour the vacuumed silicone over the product by brushing or priming (Note: paste mold release agent before pouring the silicone), and then brush the silicone on the product. Brushing must be uniform, paste layer of gauze fiber cloth to increase the strength and tensile strength of silicone after 30 minutes, and then brush another layer of silicone and another gauze fiber. Only by doing so, the silicone mold life and the number of mold turning will be improved, and you can save costs and have higher efficiency.

4. Make the outer mold: The general method is to surround the mold with plastic board or wood, and then filled with plaster mold. Using resin brushing will also do the job, which is to brush a layer of resin and then paste a layer of fiberglass cloth, and then repeat two or three times to complete the outer mold.

5. Making method for injection mold or perfusion mold: Injection or perfusion mold, is used to produce relatively smooth or simple products. Without mold line, it will save time and labor. You just need to enclose a sheet of rubber or glass of the master pattern, and then pour vacuumed silicone, remove the product after drying, and the mold is formed (Note: Perfusion mold is generally using softer silicone to produce, so the mold releasing will be easier, and will not damage the product inside silicone mold).

Curing agent addition ratio and reaction:

1. Add 2-3% curing agent, the operation time (room temperature 25℃) is about 30 minutes, the mold can be completely cured in 3-4 hours, put into the production after placed 24 hours is better.

2. Curing agent dosage is determined according to customer needs, curing time is affected by the amount of curing agent added, more curing agent will be faster and less will be slower. The silicone curing time is certainly closely related with the temperature and humidity. Silicone conventional operating temperature is 25℃; lower temperature curing will be slower, the higher will be faster; the humidity has not much impact.

Technical guide of silicone mold manufacturing:

  • The curing agent should be shaken before use. Silicone (A): curing agent (B) = 100:2-5, the weight is based on the electronic weighing result.
  • A, B two components are put into the container, stir uniform with a stirring bar. It shows that the mixing has been uniform when the color is more uniform. The bottom of the container and the wall of the container must be well scraped to ensure that the silicone is well mixed with the curing agent. Silicone and curing agent must be evenly mixed, if not stir evenly, the mold will appear one has been cured, another no curing, silicone curing occur uneven state will affect the life of silicone mold and the number of molds, and even die scrapped.
  • After silicone and curing agent stir evenly, go to the vacuum exhaust bubble link, vacuum time should not be too long, under normal circumstances, not more than ten minutes. Vacuum time too long, silicone immediately cured, resulting in cross-linking reaction, so that silicone into pieces, and can’t be painted or perfusion, thus wasting the silicone, only put the silicone into the trash, re-take silicone to do.
  • When vacuum container can’t be filled too full, or the silicone is easy to overflow containers.
  • Generally when do the middle or large product brush mold, the mold making process should to paste a layer of gauze or glass fiber cloth. If it is to do film mode, usually do fiberglass or plaster mold as a protection.
  • Silicone at room temperature 25℃ can be completely cured, do not heat curing after 3-4 hours, do not heat to cure, even to accelerate the curing time of heating, the temperature is also recommended not higher than 60 degrees.
  • If the product prototype is a ceramic and other silicon-containing material, the original mold is best to spray release agent to facilitate stripping.
  • For best results, it is best to leave the mold in place for 24 hours.

Note: it is not necessary to add silicone oil to adjust the hardness and mobility for the appropriate hardness or mobility of better products when you make silicone mold. It is not recommended to add silicone oil, for soft mold or very fine pattern product, the general proportion of silicone oil addition is only 5% -10%.
