Silicone Mold DIY Making Process

Abstract: Silicone mold is a kind of rapid mold making method. The production process is: preparation of master pattern → mold frame making → fixing master pattern → weighing silica gel → stirring silica gel and curing agent → silica gel vacuum exhausting bubble → silica gel pouring → mold curing → open mold pruning → complete.

Tools and materials: Two-component silicone (silicone and curing agent), plastic plate, electronic scale, cup, tape, glass rod, mold release agent, scissors, knife, hot melt glue gun, strip and airbrush.

Master pattern processing
1. Master pattern processing

① Remove the master pattern processing burrs and supports with a knife, be careful not to damage the surface and details.
② Dressing the master pattern in accordance with the requirements to ensure the surface size accuracy.
③ Spray the release agent evenly on the mother pattern, pay attention to spray deep or narrow slots.
④ Determine and mark the parting line.

Make mold frame
2. Make the mold frame and place in the master pattern

① Paste the mold frame with hot melt glue gun to prevent the outflow of silica gel from the gap.
② According to the size of unilateral master pattern size increased about 20~40mm material.
③ Put the master pattern on the right center position in the mold frame, and fixed in the mold frame.

Weigh the silicone
3. Weigh the silicone and the curing agent
① Accurately weigh the A, B component proportion according to the manufacturer provided.
② Remember to weigh by weight proportion rather than by volume.

Mix the silicone
4. Mix well
① Pour the silicone and curing agent in the same container for mixture.
② The material must be fully stirred evenly, otherwise it will not well curing, affecting the frequency of turning mold.

Exhaust bubbles
5. Vacuum to vent bubbles

① Put the stirred silicone and curing agent into a vacuum machine, and evacuate the air bubbles.
② Vacuum time should not more than 10 minutes, too long will produce crosslinking curing reaction.

Pour the silicone into frame
6. Pour the silicone into the mold frame

① Pour the silicone into the mold frame.
② The silicone should completely cover the master pattern, with the top increase 20~50mm.
③ Blow with a spray gun on the surface of the silicone, blown out the bubbles.

Wait for cure
7. Wait for cure

① Wait the filled silicone mold frame for curing.
② The optimum temperature of curing is 20~30℃.
③ If the temperature is below the zero, you can place the frame into the heat oven for curing.

Open the mold and trimming
8. Open the mold and trimming

① After the silicone mold is completely cured, find the parting line and cut open.
② The master pattern should be demold in the absence of external force or less force to prevent deformation.
③ Use scissors to trim the edge of the excess silicone.

Complete the operation
9. Complete the operation

① Trimming is the last step of the entire production process.
② Application of the new silicone mold is recommended after 24 hours to prevent deformation.
